Photo Rejuvenation PDF Print E-mail

At Aesthetic Specialists of the Palm Beaches, we use the Starlux 300 (WPB) and 500 (Jupiter) intense pulsed light (IPL) technology. IPL allows us to selectively target abnormal changes in the skin such as freckles, sunspots, sun damage, and small vessels. The treatments result in a gradual improvement in skin quality, color and tone and reverses the signs of aging.

How does IPL work?

The IPL photorejuvenation process uses the optimal wavelength of light to correct pigmented and vascular lesions by targeting hemoglobin in the case of vascular lesions and melanin for pigmented lesions.

Why IPL?

The Starlux IPL technology provides high efficacy and improved patient comfort over older technologies or lasers. IPL can remove the damage caused by years of sun exposure and leave the patient with a more youthful and radiant appearance.

How long does it take?

This depends on the number of areas treated in the same session. A photofacial may take between 20-30 minutes. Larger areas or multiple areas can be expected to take longer.

Are the results immediate?

NO. Initially, patients will see a darkening of the pigmented areas and it may look like a dirty spot where the sunspots once were. Over the ensuing days, the pigment gradually resolves. Typically, patients notice pigment lifting off anywhere from 7-21 days after treatment and some patients repot an even more rapid response.

How many sessions will I need?

In our practice, the average is 3 sessions for excellent results. Obviously, the more sun damage you have, the more sessions you may need. With each session, you should note a significant improvement in the appearance of your skin.

Is IPL safe in pregnancy?

There are not enough studies to determine the safety, effectiveness, and consistency in results to recommend this treatment in pregnancy.

How much does IPL cost?

This again depends on number of sessions and number of regions treated.  Our practice offers a reduced price for the treatment packages. Contact our office for specific pricing.

Are there risks to IPL?

As with any procedure, IPL can involve risk but if performed by a qualified professional on an appropriate patient, risks are minimal. One reason these treatments have gained in popularity is due to the fact that the benefits greatly outweigh the risks.
Some potential side effects include:

  • redness
  • swelling
  • facial swelling
These side effects typically disappear within a few hours of treatment.

There have been rare reports of hyper- or hypo-pigmentation, blisters, scarring and bleeding.
It is crucial to report all health issues and medications to your laser specialist in order to ensure that you receive a safe and effective treatment. It is also crucial to be honest with your laser specialist about the amount and timing of your sun exposure as recent sun exposure can increase the risks of any of the mentioned side effects.
