Fractional Skin Resurfacing PDF Print E-mail
So often in current economic times, patients come to the aesthetic specialists office looking for ways to rejuvenate themselves so they can look and feel younger in the increasingly competitive job market. Men and women alike are finding themselves back in the workforce after years of staying home with the kids or after losing their jobs due to the recession. Many 40 and 50-something people suddenly need to compete with new college graduates for the same positions. These patients need a boost in their confidence and they want to appear fresher and younger but they are often on a budget. Fractional resurfacing may be just what they need.

What is fractional resurfacing?
Fractional laser resurfacing is a relatively new method of skin rejuvenation in which the targeted areas of the skin are precisely spaced out at a microscopic level, leaving some skin perfectly intact while other zones are heat treated. In our office, we use the Starlux 500 with the 1540 handpiece by Palomar. This technology utilizes an array of hundreds of high-precision micro-beams delivered up to 1 mm deep into the dermis far below the outer most skin layer and causes collagen contraction and remodeling. The outer surface of the skin is cooled by the patented sapphire tip eliminating pain and leaving the outermost layer of skin acting as a barrier to the elements while the deeper tissues heal and tighten. There is minimal downtime (1-2 days of slight swelling) and allows for the immediate return to normal life.

What is the advantage of this treatment?
The 1540 technology provides a non-ablative skin resurfacing treatment. The goal is a reduction in fine wrinkles, reduction of acne scars and other scars, and a reduction in pore size. All of these benefits lead to rejuvenation of the skin. Using this approach, fractional laser skin resurfacing treatments can utilize the intense energy of ablative or skin resurfacing lasers, while providing the greater safety and faster recovery time of lower energy, non-ablative laser treatments. As a result, patients can undergo a relatively risk-free procedure and achieve their desired skin rejuvenation

What areas can be treated?
Face, chest, and arms are the primary target areas. The fractional resurfacing is excellent in the treatment of hypertrophic scars. A hypertrophic scar is a raised scar and can occur after any injury or surgical procedure. It may take several sessions.

What is the recovery time?
There is some minor swelling and edema for most people but these do not necessarily require a reduction in a person’s daily activities. (attached photo is immediately after a treatment).

How long does it take to notice results?
often people notice positive changes within a few days.
A series of treatments at 1-4 week intervals may be required to achieve the desired results.
